Clothing Printing Techniques

WorkWear by Design offers a full range of clothing printing services using several different techniques depending on the required style and quantity of the finished garments. Essentially our customers can choose from screen printing, transfer printing, sublimation printing and photo printing. No order is too large or too small for WorkWear by Design and our experienced team is just a phone call away to guide you through the pros and cons of Embroidered Clothing versus Printed Clothing.

Screen Printed Clothing

The traditional method of producing custom printed t shirts, printed hoodies, polo shirt printing and other personalised clothing is screen printing. In order to screen print clothes the logo design or artwork needs to be separated into the component colours. Nowadays this is usually done by vectored design programs such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw. Each colour then has a separate screen produced consisting of a very fine mesh surface using light reactive chemicals. Where the chemical has been exposed to light, the chemicals breakdown and are then washed off leaving spaces in the mesh where the ink can then be screen printed directly onto the garment. The colours are applied individually by forcing the ink through the relevant screen onto the personalised t shirt or garment.

Advantages of screen printing clothing compared to other printing methods or embroidery are:

WorkWear by Design can supply a wide range of screen printed clothes and as well as custom printed t shirts; polo shirts, sweatshirts, personalised hoodies, fleece jackets and Hi Vis vests are all extremely popular as screen printed workwear.

Transfer Printed Clothing

This process involves taking a high resolution image and printing the image onto a commercial quality transfer paper. We can print images in most formats including BMP, TIF, GIF, AI, and Jpeg. The quality of the image produced is directly related to the resolution of the image supplied, so it is vitally important to supply the best images available. Once the image is on the transfer paper it is then applied to the garment using a commercial heat press and silicone release paper. Transfer printing is a fast, low cost way of producing small quantities of printed t-shirts or printed clothing.

The advantage of transfer printing compared to other printing methods or embroidery are:

Sublimation Printed Clothing

Dye-sublimation is a high quality clothing printing process that uses heat to transfer the dye onto the clothes. The most common process lays one colour at a time; the dye being stored on a cellophane ribbon that has each colour on a separate panel. Tiny heating elements on the printing head change temperature rapidly, laying different amounts of dye depending on the amount of heat applied. After being heated into a gas, the dye diffuses onto the garment and then solidifies. When the printer finishes laying the first colour, it winds the ribbon on to the next colour panel to prepare for the next cycle. The entire process is repeated four times in total; the first three lay the colours onto the clothing garment to form a complete image, whilst the last process lays a laminate over the top, helping to protect the image from re-sublimating when handled or exposed to warm conditions.

Advantages of sublimation printing compared to other printing methods or embroidery are:
